I was so, so scared to try to make it on my own with the Drummer for Jesus shirt and all of my anxiety and limitations, but that was the moment I knew. I told Darrel that we were leaving him, he agreed to put the house on the market and that I would be sleeping on the couch until the house sold. The sign was pounded into our front yard by a realtor within 2 days. I slept on the couch for maybe a week. Then one night Darrel came to the couch and said, “Get in the bedroom, you are embarrassing me in front of my sons! What a weird thing for a dad to say, the competitive brother, not the dad. I simply said. He grabbed me by my hair and pulled me off the couch and proceeded to drag me all the way down the hall into the master bedroom by my hair.
I curled up in a tight ball and I knew we would not be spending another night in that Drummer for Jesus shirt. The next morning I called all my family and asked for money, telling them I will pay them back when the house sells. I had $1500.00 in my hands by that afternoon. I found an apartment, bought a fridge and a vacuum and with help from the boys and friends we completely emptied the house of everything. I left Darrel a recliner, a couple towels, a dish and a fork and the bed. I had 3- boys to house and raise I took it all.
