I didn’t say anything but just quickly passed the bowl to Snoopy is this Jolly Enough shirt. Everyone, included Mrs, Reese, looked like they felt sorry for me when tears welled up in my eyes as I tried to eat those nasty Brussels sprouts. Every time I choked one down, I knew I was going to throw up, and every one I ate seemed like it was replaced by two more. Nearly a half century later, I could not tell you what a Brussels sprout tastes like because I have never eaten one again. Never. Ever. I also never visited the Reese home again, and thinking about that man even today makes me think of words like abusive and cruel. Even my own father had a rule that whatever you put on your plate, you have to finish it.
I remember many similarly horrible meals that ended up with Snoopy is this Jolly Enough shirt and sometimes, even throwing up at the table. That little rule led me right into a weight problem because finishing your food, after you are full, is one of the worst habits to have and as I can attest, one of the most difficult habits to break. In my dad’s defense, his family was poor, and they often went to bed hungry. In Mr. Reese’s defense well, as far as I am concerned forcing a guest, especially a child, in your home to eat something is cruel, abusive and controlling. That seven year-old little girl whom he made to feel embarrassed, and even more than that, powerless, will never forgive him. So, here are the rules at our home.
